INSIGHTS INTO AN ALBUM:

After my last album, “The Obama Milli Remix Guy Strikes Back!”, I took a break from recording and writing to work on other things.

While on hiatus, I also took time out to analyze the songs I was selling on iTunes.  Between the last album and my first one, “Attack of the Obama Milli Remix Guy!”, I noticed that the songs that were selling the best on iTunes were the ones that were either parodies or commentary on celebrity happenings.

When I first started making songs in college, the ones that proved most popular were always my funny songs.  And, even as I have made songs that were occasionally more serious in nature, the ones that did the best were always the ones with comedy.

So, after all these years of making these types of songs, I finally decided to make a whole album’s worth of them.  About darn time!

All of the songs on the album are funny re-makings of other people’s songs.  Per the laws of parody, because they are considered commentary on other people’s works they can be sold legally – good news for me, as I will be releasing more of these types of songs in the future.

That’s it for now – be sure to preview the album over at iTunes, and get your copy of “Prince of Parody, Vol. 1” today!

Ladies and gentleman… it’s here – “The O-Bama Mixtape!!”

Wow, what a fun project to put together!  I’ve made CDs before, but this was the first one that was ever requested by others outside of myself.

After the “Obama, Obama” song started to take off, people started messaging me asking, “yo, do you have a mixtape coming out?”  I thought, “that’s not a bad idea,” and got to work on it.

And it’s done! And it sounds great!

Aight, so you know I can’t just give you a list of titles.  If you’re like me, you like to have an idea of how the songs were created. So, what follows is a list of titles, along with a mini-blurb about the song itself:

1. “The O-Bama Mixtape Intro” – Starts off with a clip from an Obama speech, followed by the song, which talks a bit about the choosing of Obama as President.  The beat used is from the Baby song, “I Run This.”

2. “I’m Gonna Make It” – Talks about my current situation, and my dreams of making it in the music biz.

3. “Obama, Obama” – The popular Lil’ Wayne “A Milli” remake where I talk about all things Obama-related.

4. “Shout Out 2 My Big Girls” – Dedicated to all the big, beautiful ladies out there.  Funny and poinient, too!

5. “Erectile Dysfunction” – A parody of Snoop Dogg’s “Sexual Eruption” that proved to be very popular at my brother’s girlfriend’s brother’s college, VCU.  It’s about… well, read the title, duh!

6. “The O-Bama Mixtape Interlude” – A very, very short interlude about how I hate interludes.

7. “I Just Want The Paper” – Produced by me, and featuring Notorious B.I.G. on the chorus, this song talks about wanting to have money, regardless of if I get anything else.  Very catchy and club-ready!

8. “Can’t Leave Rap Alone” – Features Jay-Z on the chorus.  Basically a slick-talking track where I talk about why the rap game needs me!

9. “Blow It All” – This is what I like to call a “skill track.” My flow on this one is fast, and talks about what I’d do if I had a big wad of cash to blow.

10. “True Lyricist” – Using the Tupac “Ambitionz Az a Ridah,” I wreck havoc on all those so-called “true lyricist” who whine and complain about not getting airplay against someone like Soulja Boy or Lil’ Wayne.

11. “I Put On (Remix)” – Has Young Jeezy on the chorus (couldn’t find the beat without him on it), where I talk about moving from VA to GA, trying to survive, and other things involving me

12. “Hey Jesse Jackson” – A remix of the Outkast song, “Ms. Jackson” where I go at Jesse Jackson for his recent negative comments about Barack Obama.

13. “Kick Bush” – A remix of Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick Push” where I go at President Bush for his… well, his lack of being a good President.

14. “Flashing Lights Freestyle” – Not really a freestyle, but I take Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” and talk about Hollywood and the Paparazzi, as well as the stars that have been confronted with it.

15. “The O-Bama Mixtape Outro” – The last track where I give out all my contact information!

So, there you go!  Download the mixtape, and let me know what you think!

INSIGHT INTO A SONG:

Last December, Snoop Dogg released his song, “Sensual Seduction,” and after one listen, I KNEW this song would be ripe for a parody!  After taking two days to figure out what I could use as subject matter that would sound close to the phonetics of the original song, I suddenly thought of “Erectile Dysfunction” and burst out laughing!

Clearly, this was a good idea to run with.

I recorded it and wanted to get the song out there, but I had two problems: one, I didn’t have time to put a REAL video together because it was around Christmas and staying with family; and two, I wasn’t too familiar with any free MP3 download sites.  So, I found a bunch of pictures online, pasted them and put them together on www.onetruemedia.com, loaded up the music and made a crappy-ass video for the song, figuring it wouldn’t get much play, but I could at least send it out to my friends via youtube.

Imagine my surprise when, one day after putting it on youtube, it had 120 views – and I hadn’t even told anyone about the song yet!

5 months later, the song just passed the 10,000 view mark.  My brother’s girlfriend’s brother, who goes to VCU, said it was the #1 downloaded song at his school – odd, given that I didn’t give a link address for the download of the song until last month.  Guess someone must have recorded it and sent it around – and I couldn’t be happier about it!

So, enjoy the song! Come back next week for another song, courtesy of me!

*UPDATE: After the project ended, I started working on another website featuring a character named Non Juan, a puppet who is terrible at getting ladies to date him.  One of the music videos we shot for him was a remake of “Erectile Dysfunction” recorded in his voice.  This is the video that now takes the place of the original video which, as you may recall, was very, very crappy.  Enjoy!” – A.P.T., May 18, 2010.*
